Math solver scanner: snap a photo, get every step

Use Sumzo as a math solver scanner: take a picture of a math problem — printed or neatly handwritten — check what Sumzo read, and get the answer with every step.

Tip: use the math keyboard for symbols like √, x² and fractions. You can also attach a photo, screenshot or PDF of the problem (up to 4 files).

Explanation

How to solve math from a photo

  1. Tap “Take or upload a photo of the problem”. On a phone you can use the camera; on a computer, choose an image, a screenshot or a PDF.
  2. Sumzo shows the problem it read from the picture. Fix anything it got wrong — a smudged minus sign or a 7 that looks like a 1.
  3. Press Solve. You get the answer first, then the working step by step.
  4. A worksheet with several questions? Choose the ones you want and Sumzo solves them all.

Worked examples

Easy: a photo of 12+13\frac{1}{2} + \frac{1}{3}

  1. Sumzo reads the picture as “1/2 + 1/3”.
  2. Common denominator 6: 36+26=56\frac{3}{6} + \frac{2}{6} = \frac{5}{6}.
  3. Check: 56≈0.833\frac{5}{6} \approx 0.833, and 0.5+0.333=0.8330.5 + 0.333 = 0.833 ✓.

Medium: a handwritten 3x−4=113x - 4 = 11

  1. Sumzo reads “3x − 4 = 11”. If it had read “3x − 4 = 17”, you would correct the 17 before solving.
  2. Add 4 to both sides: 3x=153x = 15. Divide by 3: x=5x = 5.
  3. Check: 3(5)−4=113(5) - 4 = 11 ✓.

Hard: a worksheet with three questions

  1. Sumzo reads three problems from one photo: 2(x+3)=142(x + 3) = 14, 25% of 80, and 144\sqrt{144}.
  2. 2(x+3)=142(x + 3) = 14 gives x+3=7x + 3 = 7, so x=4x = 4. Check: 2(7)=142(7) = 14 ✓.
  3. 25% of 80 is 0.25×80=200.25 \times 80 = 20, and 144=12\sqrt{144} = 12 because 122=14412^2 = 144 ✓.

Tips for a photo Sumzo can read

  • Crop to the problem you want. Several problems in one picture are fine, but cut out the rest of the page.
  • Use good, even light and hold the phone flat above the page — shadows and tilted photos cause misreadings.
  • Write clearly if it’s your own handwriting: keep fractions on separate lines and make minus signs long.
  • Always check the text Sumzo read before pressing Solve. One wrong digit changes the whole answer.

Frequently asked questions

How does the math scanner work?

You add a photo, Sumzo AI reads the maths in it and shows you the problem as text. Once you have checked it, Sumzo solves it — with its math engine when it can calculate the answer exactly, otherwise with Sumzo AI.

Can it read handwriting?

Yes, neat handwriting usually works. Messy or very small writing can be misread, which is why Sumzo always shows what it read so you can fix it.

Can I take a picture with my phone camera?

Yes. On a phone, tapping the photo button lets you take a picture with the camera or choose one from your gallery.

Does the photo math solver work online, without an app?

Yes. It works in your phone’s or computer’s browser — there is nothing to download.

Which files can I upload?

JPG, PNG, GIF and WebP images (up to 5 MB each) and PDFs (up to 15 MB), with up to 4 files at a time.

Is the AI picture solver free?

Yes, with a fair-use daily limit on AI answers. A free account saves your solved problems to your history.
