How to use the homework helper

  2. Area of a triangle =12×base×height= \frac{1}{2} \times \text{base} \times \text{height}.
  3. 12×10×6=30\frac{1}{2} \times 10 \times 6 = 30, so the area is 30 cm230\text{ cm}^2.
  4. Check: a rectangle 10 cm by 6 cm has area 60 cm², and the triangle is half of it ✓.

Hard: checking your own answer

  1. “I got x=4x = 4 for 3(x−2)=2x+13(x - 2) = 2x + 1. Is it right?”
  2. Substitute x=4x = 4: the left side is 3(2)=63(2) = 6 but the right side is 2(4)+1=92(4) + 1 = 9. They differ, so x=4x = 4 is wrong.
  3. Solve it: 3x−6=2x+13x - 6 = 2x + 1, so x=7x = 7.
  4. Check: 3(5)=153(5) = 15 and 2(7)+1=152(7) + 1 = 15 ✓. A common slip is writing 3(x−2)3(x - 2) as 3x−23x - 2.
