Math help from an AI math tutor

Get math help that explains things the way a tutor would. Ask a question, choose how much detail you want, and ask “Why?” about any step until it makes sense.

Tip: use the math keyboard for symbols like √, x² and fractions. You can also attach a photo, screenshot or PDF of the problem (up to 4 files).

How to get math help from Sumzo

  1. Ask your question in your own words — a problem to solve, or something you don’t understand, like “Why do I flip the fraction when dividing?”
  2. Explanations start at Simple, in everyday words. Switch to Standard or Advanced to see more of the reasoning.
  3. Tick “Tell Sumzo where you are stuck” and describe the step that confuses you, so the explanation focuses on it.
  4. Stuck on one step? Ask “Why?” on that step, or type a follow-up question.
  5. When it clicks, practise: the Learning Center explains each topic, and Practice gives you new questions with hints.

Worked examples

Easy: “Why is 12+13\frac{1}{2} + \frac{1}{3} not 25\frac{2}{5}?”

  1. You can only add fractions when they count the same size of piece.
  2. Halves and thirds both turn into sixths: 12=36\frac{1}{2} = \frac{3}{6} and 13=26\frac{1}{3} = \frac{2}{6}.
  3. So 12+13=36+26=56\frac{1}{2} + \frac{1}{3} = \frac{3}{6} + \frac{2}{6} = \frac{5}{6}.
  4. Sense check: 25\frac{2}{5} is less than 12\frac{1}{2} on its own, so it can’t be the total.

Medium: a follow-up question on x2=49x^2 = 49

  1. Taking the square root gives x=7x = 7 or x=−7x = -7.
  2. Follow-up: “Why are there two answers?”
  3. Because a negative times a negative is positive: 72=497^2 = 49 and (−7)2=49(-7)^2 = 49, so both work.

Hard: the same answer at two levels — differentiate x3x^3

  1. Simple: bring the power down in front and take one off the power, so x3x^3 becomes 3x23x^2.
  2. Advanced: from the definition, (x+h)3−x3h=3x2+3xh+h2\frac{(x + h)^3 - x^3}{h} = 3x^2 + 3xh + h^2.
  3. As hh gets closer to 0, this gets closer to 3x23x^2. Both explanations give ddxx3=3x2\frac{d}{dx}x^3 = 3x^2.

Tips for getting good math help

  • Say where you are stuck, not just what the question is — “I don’t get why we divide by 2 here” gets a better answer.
  • Ask for the reason, not only the answer. “Why?” is the most useful question in maths.
  • Try the next step yourself before reading it, then compare.
  • Check the answer makes sense: a probability above 1 or a negative length means something went wrong.

Frequently asked questions

Is this math help free?

Yes. Sumzo’s math help is free, with no subscription. AI answers have a fair-use daily limit, and a free account keeps your history.

How is an AI math tutor different from a math help calculator?

A calculator gives you the result of a formula. An AI math tutor explains why each step works, answers follow-up questions and adjusts the level of detail. Sumzo does both: calculators for exact results, and Sumzo AI for explanations.

Can I ask follow-up questions?

Yes. After any answer you can ask “Why?” about a step or type your own follow-up, and the explanation continues from there.

What if I still don’t understand a step?

Switch to Simple for everyday wording, ask about that one step, or open the matching lesson in the Learning Center for a full explanation with examples.

Is math help available online at any time?

Yes. Sumzo works in your browser at any time, on a phone, tablet or computer, with nothing to install.

Does the math helper work for every level?

It covers everything from times tables and fractions to algebra, trigonometry, statistics and introductory calculus — and you choose how detailed the explanation is.
