Math Checker: Is My Answer Right?

This math checker starts from your answer. Type the problem, then what you got — and your working if you have it. Sumzo tells you whether it is right and, if it isn’t, points to the first step that went wrong instead of just giving you the answer.

Tip: use the math keyboard for symbols like √, x² and fractions. You can also attach a photo, screenshot or PDF of the problem (up to 4 files).

How to check your answer

  1. Type the problem exactly as it was set, or add a photo of it.
  2. Type your answer in the second box. Add your working too — that is how Sumzo can find where it went wrong.
  3. Press Solve. You get a clear right or not-quite verdict, the step to look at, and the correct working.

Example checks

Right: 2x+5=172x + 5 = 17, answer x=6x = 6

  1. Substitute your answer: 2(6)+5=172(6) + 5 = 17.
  2. Both sides equal 17, so x=6x = 6 is correct.

A sign slip: simplify 3(x−2)−(x+4)3(x - 2) - (x + 4), answer 2x−22x - 2

  1. Expanding gives 3x−6−x−43x - 6 - x - 4: the minus in front of the bracket changes the +4+4 to −4-4.
  2. The working went wrong there — using +4+4 gives 2x−22x - 2.
  3. Correct answer: 2x−102x - 10. Check with x=1x = 1: 3(−1)−5=−83(-1) - 5 = -8 and 2(1)−10=−82(1) - 10 = -8 ✓.

Half right: x2−5x+6=0x^2 - 5x + 6 = 0, answer x=2x = 2

  1. x=2x = 2 works: 4−10+6=04 - 10 + 6 = 0.
  2. But a quadratic can have two solutions: (x−2)(x−3)=0(x - 2)(x - 3) = 0, so x=3x = 3 also works.
  3. Full answer: x=2x = 2 or x=3x = 3.

Mistakes the checker often finds

  • A minus sign in front of a bracket not applied to every term inside.
  • Only one solution of a quadratic, or an extraneous one kept.
  • Units left off, or changed halfway (cm and m in one answer).
  • An answer rounded too early, so the final digits are off.

Frequently asked questions

How does the math checker check my answer?

It solves the problem, compares the result with your answer, and — if you added working — follows your steps to find the first one that changes the problem. Sumzo’s math engine re-checks the result whenever it can.

Do I have to type my working?

No, the answer alone is enough for a right-or-wrong verdict. Adding working lets Sumzo show exactly where a wrong answer went off track.

How is this different from Sumzo’s other tools?

The AI homework helper is built to solve a problem and explain it; checking is an option there. This page starts from your answer, so you see what you did right before any solution.

Can it check proofs or trig identities?

It can comment on your steps. To test whether a trig identity is true, the trig identities calculator checks both sides at dozens of angles.
