Formula

d=(x2−x1)2+(y2−y1)2d = \sqrt{(x_2 - x_1)^2 + (y_2 - y_1)^2}

The distance formula is the Pythagorean theorem on the coordinate grid.

M=(x1+x22,y1+y22)M = \left(\tfrac{x_1 + x_2}{2}, \tfrac{y_1 + y_2}{2}\right)

The midpoint averages the coordinates.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the coordinates of both points.
  2. Press Calculate.

Worked example

From (1, 2) to (4, 6)

d = √(3² + 4²) = √25 = 5.

M = ((1 + 4)/2, (2 + 6)/2) = (5/2, 4).

Frequently asked questions

Does the order of the points matter?

No. Swapping the points gives the same distance and midpoint.

Why is my distance a square root?

Most distances are irrational. Sumzo shows the exact form and a decimal.
