Formula

m=y2−y1x2−x1m = \frac{y_2 - y_1}{x_2 - x_1}

Slope is rise over run between the two points.

y=mx+b,b=y1−mx1y = mx + b,\quad b = y_1 - m x_1

The y-intercept b is where the line crosses the y-axis.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the coordinates of two different points.
  2. Press Calculate to see the slope, intercept and equation.

Worked example

Line through (1, 3) and (3, 7)

m = (7 − 3)/(3 − 1) = 2.

b = 3 − 2·1 = 1, so y = 2x + 1.

Frequently asked questions

What does an undefined slope mean?

The two points have the same x value, so the line is vertical: its equation is x = constant.

Is slope the same as gradient?

Yes — “gradient” is the common term in the UK and Australia.
